Unique Vendors

We always enjoy unique and one-of-a-kind vendors at the Sumpter Flea Market! But this year, we have a vendor who is selling their homemade Birdhouses. But that is not what makes them different. The Rodriguez Family moved to John Day from Eugene last year because the dryer climate is better for their son, Christopher, who has Cebral Palsy. The money they raise from the sale of their birdhouses goes to pay for equipment and construction costs associated with making their house in John Day accessible for Christopher's special needs. The birdhouses are hand crafted and the work is a family affair. The painstaking work on each birdhouse is done in the kitchen while Christopher supervises. Each birdhouse is very unique and personalized to suit almost any request.....within reason of course.  You can find the Rodriquez's at the corner of Austin and Bonanza during the Sumpter Flea Market Stop by, meet Christopher, and see these beautiful birdhouses for yourself! If you would like more information, you can call them at {541} 575-5609 or {541} 285-0519 or send them an email: rbirdhouses@yahoo.com

Sumpter Flea Market

Ready or not, the first Flea Market of the season is just around the bend. Memorial Day is upon us and that means Flea Market time in Sumpter, Oregon! Soon, vendors will be setting up for the first Flea Market of the season May 23rd-25th. To get the most of your time in Sumpter, here are a few tips that might help:
  1. Some lodging in Sumpter requires a minimum 3-night stay for Flea Markets and remember, lodging fills up fast, so if you need a place to stay in Sumpter, make your reservations as soon as you can.
  2. Weather in Sumpter is unpredictable-even for Memorial Day. Be prepared for every type of weather condition! Cold, Hot, Windy, Dry, Rainy-it can even snow! So be ready!
  3. Plan to arrive early-most Vendors are fresh and ready to sell early! Vendors are usually ready to sell on Friday morning, even though the official dates are Sat-Mon. Parking fills up fast, so if you need to park, get here early to ensure a good spot. Please be aware of private property when parking.
  4. Bring plenty of cash-no banks in Sumpter! The ATMS up here tend to get hit pretty hard and run out of money fast due to high demand.
  5. Bring small bills and change-the vendors will appreciate it.
  6. Keep your dogs on a leash-it's an Ordinance and will help keep you and your dog safer.
  7. Although ATVS are allowed our side streets (the speed limit is 15 mph) , they aren't allowed on Mill Street, which is a State Highway and State Laws do apply.
  8. The Flea Market is spread throughout Sumpter so to see it all, you will do a lot of walking between downtown and the Fairgrounds.
  9. Ride the bus! Thanks to Community Connections of Baker City, there is a bus that makes frequent stops throughout Sumpter for free. If they aren't full, they will stop for you just about anywhere, but they do have designated stops too.
Here's an idea: if you are planning to ride the Sumpter Valley Railroad Steam Train,  just park down at the McEwen Train Depot, ride the first train to Sumpter, then ride the train back at the end of the day! See the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge, visit our Museums, ride the train, and enjoy the Flea Market all at the same time and you won't have to worry about parking in Sumpter! Tickets are good all day. Just be sure to know the schedule of the train so you don't miss the last one! train schedule
We welcome Vendors and Visitors alike and we can't stress enough-there are more things to see in Sumpter than just the Flea Market! and hope these tips will help you have a great visit in Sumpter Oregon! If you need more information contact the Chamber of Commerce at 541-894-2249 or send them an email: mjclarke97877@msn.com See  you in Sumpter!

Sumpter Breakfast Club

We had a great breakfast at the Sumpter Community Center (the schoolhouse) last Sunday morning.....it was informal and enjoyable and served by the same group of folks that put on the great chili feed last fall that helped raise money for our snow plow!  From the moment we walked in, they started serving us. Volunteers.  It was so much fun to see the Breakfast Club in action! Even the Mayor was there. In fact, the Mayor was cooking and serving as well. Not only did the food taste good, but we had a good time chatting with folks as well. What did it cost? Well, it's free...you just pay what you think the breakfast is worth to you-and the money goes to support good causes in our community. It was nice to see the remodeling already accomplished with money donated so far. Along with the kitchen remodel, the Breakfast Club has also raised money to add to money the Snowmobile Club has donated  for new windows the schoolhouse needs...Despite the tasty food and fun atmosphere, we won't be forsaking our favorite restaurants for breakfast, but we will be planning to eat at the next Breakfast Club! Breakfast is served up every 3rd Sunday each month from about
7 am - 11 am. The next breakfast will be on May 19th, just in time for mother's day. If you need more information, just call {541} 894-2341 or visit the Sumpter Breakfast Club online today!

Sumpter Veterans

Hello and welcome to the Sumpter Veterans! Hopefully you found the new home here for discussions regarding the Sumpter Veterans. It just works out easier, and is more logical, to have discussions regarding the Veterans group here. We hope you will feel comfortable joining in the discussions. If you have any questions, or need assistance with this blog, feel free to send an email............veterans@sumpter.org  We have a large, and rather quiet, group of Veterans up here in Sumpter who have served our Country and one of the ways we want to honor our Veterans is this blog. So even if you aren't a Veteran, this is a good place to say thank you to men and women who have served this nation or just say hello. Whether they went to war or served in peacetime really doesn't matter. Even after serving their country in war or peacetime, this group of Veterans want to continue serving by finding ways they can contribute to their community and they have lots of ideas on how to do so! Besides sharing ideas here, the Veterans meet every 2nd Wednesday of each month down at the
Scoop-N-Steamer at 9 am. It's called the Coffee Break and is informal and interesting...and the coffee is provided by the friendly folks at the Scoop-N-Steamer. Veterans are invited to swap stories, ideas, and enjoy the kind of fellowship that Veterans enjoy. Some good ideas on how the Sumpter Veterans can serve their community have already been discussed........One of the popular ideas lately is cleaning and maintaining the Sumpter Cemetary. Other ideas include a Memorial Day Service, the Miners Jubilee Parade, and more. The annual Sumpter Christmas Parade already features a color detail led by a local Veteran and is enjoyed by all. So, we look forward to your ideas and comments (and even your stories) and we'll help you stay informed with local information and events.  Thanks for stopping by!

Dredge Park Trails

The snow is gone, and we can finally venture outdoors without all that cold weather gear. Of course, our first outing in the Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge State Park was even nicer since we just lived through winter. Signs of  life were everywhere as we made our way through the park on the well-groomed trails. The trails are open and the snow is gone but the green of spring has not quite shown up yet. The trails are only under a mile each, but they offer a nice walk and it will be hard for the visitor to remember they are within city limits and walking distance of  their lodging as they traverse these trails. Whether you are an avid bird watcher, nature lover, or just want to stretch your legs, you will enjoy the Sumpter Valley Dredge Trails! The trails surround the Dredge and wind through actual Dredge Tailings left behind by the Dredge. You can see how nature bounced has bounced back from extensive Gold Mining since the Dredge ceased operations in the Sumpter Valley over approx. 60 years ago. Right now, you can use the trails to walk around the Dredge and enjoy this historical landmark from the outside.....and then you can tour the Dredge on the inside when the season opens officially on May 1st, but the Park is open year round. In the winter, you can exchange your hiking boots for snowshoes and enjoy the same trails when nature blankets the area in snow....during the season, you can ride your ATV to the dredge and during the winter, you can ride to the Dredge on your snowmobile. Of course, just walking on the trails is nice too!

Saturday Prayer Breakfasts

The sun is just rising over the Sumpter Valley on this Saturday morning, as a group of men gather at the McEwen Bible Fellowship just outside of Sumpter. It is early, starting at 7:00 am, but we were rewarded on our way to the church this morning by a beautiful sunrise and some elk grazing just off the road. These guys agree that a homemade breakfast, followed by a bible study is well worth the early hour and the fellowship is nice too. When the breakfast, cooked by a small group from within the group,  is over and plates are cleared, the bible study begins as taught by the Minister of the church. Noone is left out of this bible study. You are encoraged to participate with questions and comments. Discussions are informative and interesting. Then it is time to go home to enjoy the remainder of the day. There is no charge for the breakfast (a donation basket is left on the table). It is admittedly difficult for some to rise so early on a Saturday morning, but if you are a man looking for a bible study, and you don't mind getting up early, then you might just enjoy this Mens Prayer Breakfast and Bible Study. Call {541} 894-2303 for more information.

When Will The Snow Melt

That is one of the most popular questions we hear at this time of the year. And the answer is: when it's ready to melt. It's that simple. Usually the same people that couldn't wait for the snow to start falling at the beginning of the season are now wanting it to melt. It's a dilema that won't soon be solved.....If you are planning a trip to Sumpter ~ Great! No matter what the time of year, we think Sumpter is a great place to visit. But of course, we have a certain bias since we do live here. However, if you are coming, we welcome  you, just remember that our "season" doesn't really get off the ground until Memorial Day. Of course, the Oregon State Dredge Park does open it's gates officially on May 1st. The first Flea Market is on Memorial Day, the Sumpter Valley Railroad starts it's season on Memorial Day as well.
So, we have this stretch of time between the snow and opening for summer with not much going on. Of course, we welcome our visitors whenever they come to Sumpter. And, if you do come now, you can visit the Sumpter Museum, the Cracker Creek Museum of Mining
(the Monighan), and of course, you can always see the Dredge-you just can't walk out onto the Dredge itself until May 1st. Please remember that our trails and forest service roads suffer most of their wear and tear during these days when the snow is gone but the roads and trails are still soft and wet. The streets of Sumpter, however,  are passable and you can ride your atvs on them. If you're planning a little Gold Panning in our area, keep in mind the lakes and streams are still very cold and likely to be running fast. The Elkhorn Scenic Byway isn't open yet since the road won't even be open until July. But the drive up from Baker City and on up to Granite is clear. So if you are planning a trip to Eastern Oregon ~ come on up to Sumpter~ we're only about a beautiful 40 minute drive from Baker City....we think a drive to Sumpter is well worth the trip ~ no matter what time of the year!

Sumpter Restaurants

Okay, you came to Sumpter to ride the Steam Train, or perhaps to See the Gold Dredge or visit a museum......but whatever the reason that brought you to Sumpter...you're hungry. So your question is: "Can I get a meal in Sumpter?" The answer is YES. Sumpter might not have a lot of restaurants, but what we do have is unique and tasty! Try the Scoop-N-Steamer, for instance, a full-service cafe, with espresso and ice cream. By the way.....there is a new owner at the Scoop-N-Steamer.  You will  find the Scoop-N-Steamer open 7 days a week all year round. The Elkhorn has a small cafe tucked over on the side of their lounge that has a great hamburger menu-ever have a hamburger with marshmallow and peanut butter before?  The Elkhorn has it! My favorite is the Cowboy Burger! The Elkhorn opens at lunchtime....you can call the Elkhorn at 541-894-2244. Sumpter also has a unique Italian Restaurant-Borello's. Nice atmosphere, with a lounge too. Borello's opens for Dinner at about 3 pm. Call 541-894-2480 for more info. If you need a quick snack, you can stop in at the Stage Stop or the Gold Post. You might not find Mickey D's or Burger King up here, but you will find a unique place
to eat in Sumpter! Visit Sumpter Restaurants page at www.sumpter.org

Day Trips

So, you came to Sumpter, you went to the Dredge, you visited the Museums, you rode the Historic Steam Train, now what? Well, good question! Okay, so you already knew about the interesting  Kam Wah Chung  Museum over in John Day.....and of course you've heard about the must see  Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City, but did you know about the Condon Visitor Center or the John Day Fossil Beds.......These are just an example of a few day trips you can take from Sumpter! There are a lot more! Have you heard of The Painted Hills? First, plan to stay the weekend or at least a couple of days, in Sumpter, then hit the road for many interesting day trips that you can make from here. For instance, John Day is only an hour or so from Sumpter, Baker City is only 30 miles away. Richland and the Snake River are only an hour or so drive away. Whether you wish to stay in a motel, bed and breakfast, log cabin, or just camp in the forest or park your camper at a local RV park...Sumpter can be your home away from while you explore Eastern Oregon!
